In ”Jazzdans” a dancer and two musicians who had never worked together before, met on an initiative from Norrlandsoperan. Tove’s method as a freelancing dancer, a practice of relating and finding space to work individually within given frameworks, became the concept of the performance. Instead of trying to reach consensus among the members of the group, the process became an opportunity to experience and make visible each other’s practices through performance. Two weeks of own work, without knowledge of each other’s choice of music and movement, followed by two weeks of joint process, using methods of overlapping rather than merging or finding balance. The title ”Jazzdans” suggested another kind of jazz and another kind of dance, non-merged, eluding visual and sonic expectations and categorizations.
This was Tove Salmgren’s first individual choreographic experiment as a freelance dancer. The musicians, Linus Mattsson (tuba) and Mats Lindström (percussion), were working at the Symphony Orchestra at Norrlandsoperan with experience of both pop and classical music.
Presented at Norrlandsoperan, Umeå, and in various locations all over Västerbotten. Produced by Norrlandsoperan, 2008.
